Castle Lager is the only sponsor of three of South Africa’s national sports teams, and this ad sees the coming together of rugby, soccer and cricket Superfans, imagining the incredible journey of a hypothetical day when three different games take place in one city.
Shot over five days in Cape Town, it was a great experience working with director Giaco Angelini, who was no stranger to the Castle Lager brand, having shot many of their iconic TV and cinema commercials over the last two decades. Not forgetting the terrific Sinister Studio, who always manage to over-deliver incredible work, the production team and all the sports superstars who revealed themselves to be humble and down to earth. And just to live up to the stereotype, I got to teach one of the South African players how to dive like a true Italian pro.
The result is a gazillion hours of footage concentrated into about a minute of pure sportsmanship and friendship, South African style. And a shortlist for TV Sport Commercial of the Year at the Discovery Sport Industry Award 2014, decided by public vote.
The following gallery of behind the scenes pictures is from the cameras of David Prior, Carl Willoughby and myself. It is dedicated to the director of the commercial and my friend, Giaco Angelini, who sadly passed earlier this year. What a great man. I miss you, Giaco.
